Mother Teresa was born in Macedonia in 1910. At the age of twelve, she felt strongly the call of God. At the age of eighteen she left her parental home and joined the Sisters of Loreto, an Irish community of nuns with missions in India.
After a few months' training in Dublin she was sent to India.
In 1950, Mother Teresa received permission to start her own order, "The Missionaries of Charity", whose primary task was to love and care for those persons nobody was prepared to look after. For over many years she ministered to the poor, sick, orphaned, and dying in the slums of Calcutta. She wished to spread what had been working so well in India to the rest of the world. At the time of her death it was operating 610 missions in 123 countries, including hospices, homes for people with hiv/aids, orphanages, soup kitchens and schools.
Mother Teresa’s work has been recognised throughout the word and she received a number of awards, including the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979.
She died on September in 1997. Following her death she was beatified and given the title Blessed Teresa of Calcutta.
